Ring Size Guide

Finding your perfect ring size is essential for comfort and security. Use our comprehensive guide to measure your ring size accurately at home and ensure your new jewelry fits perfectly.

How to Measure Your Ring Size

There are several reliable methods to determine your ring size at home. Choose the approach that works best with the materials you have available.

Method 1: Measure an Existing Ring

The most accurate way to find your ring size is to measure a ring that already fits well on the intended finger.

  1. Find a ring that fits the intended finger comfortably.
  2. Place the ring on a piece of paper and trace the inner circle with a pencil.
  3. Measure the diameter of this circle in millimeters.
  4. Use our conversion chart below to find your ring size.

Pro tip: Make sure to place the ring completely flat against the paper for an accurate tracing.

Method 2: String or Paper Strip

Don't have a ring to measure? Use string or a strip of paper to measure your finger circumference.

  1. Wrap a piece of string, strip of paper, or floss around the base of your finger.
  2. Mark where the material overlaps to form a complete circle.
  3. Measure the length of the string/paper up to the marking in millimeters.
  4. Find this measurement in the "circumference" column of our chart below.

Pro tip: Don't pull too tight—the string/paper should fit comfortably around your finger with just enough room to slide over your knuckle.

Method 3: Printable Ring Sizer

Use our printable ring sizer for a quick and easy measurement.

  1. Download our ring sizer PDF.
  2. Print at 100% scale (no "fit to page" or scaling).
  3. Verify scale by measuring the included 5cm reference line.
  4. Cut out the sizer and the small slit as indicated.
  5. Insert the pointed end through the slit to form a loop.
  6. Place around your finger and pull tight enough that the sizer doesn't fall off but loose enough to slide over your knuckle.
  7. Read your size where the pointed end crosses the numbers.

Pro tip: For the most accurate measurement, try the ring sizer at different times of day.

Factors That Affect Ring Size

Several factors can influence how a ring fits on your finger. Being aware of these will help you determine the most accurate size for your new jewelry.

Time of Day

Fingers tend to be smaller in the morning and can expand throughout the day. We recommend measuring your ring size in the evening when your fingers are at their largest.

Recommendation: Measure in the evening for the most accurate size.

Temperature

Fingers expand in warm weather and shrink in cold weather. If it's particularly cold when you measure, your ring size may be smaller than usual.

Recommendation: Measure at room temperature (around 70°F/21°C).

Exercise and Salt Intake

Physical activity and high salt consumption can cause temporary swelling in your fingers.

Recommendation: Avoid measuring after intense exercise or a high-sodium meal.

Knuckle Size

If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, you may need a larger size to ensure the ring passes over your knuckle comfortably.

Recommendation: Consider a ring with a tapered band or hinged design if you have large knuckles.

Humidity

High humidity can cause fingers to swell, while dry conditions may cause fingers to shrink slightly.

Recommendation: Be aware of weather conditions when measuring and adjust accordingly.

Special Considerations for Different Ring Styles

The style and design of a ring can affect how it fits. Consider these factors when determining your ring size.

Wide Bands

Wide bands tend to fit more snugly than narrow bands. If your ring width is 6mm or greater, we recommend sizing up by a half size from your standard measurement. For example, if you normally wear a size 6, you might need a 6.5 for a wide band ring.

Comfort Fit Rings

Comfort fit rings have a rounded interior, which allows them to slide more easily over knuckles. These rings may feel looser once in place. If you're choosing a comfort fit ring, consider sizing down by a quarter to half size from your standard measurement.

Stackable Rings

If you plan to wear multiple rings stacked together on one finger, you may need to size up slightly to accommodate the additional width. Consider going up a quarter size for each additional ring you plan to stack, especially if they are wider bands.

Eternity Bands

Eternity bands cannot be resized due to the continuous placement of gemstones. Be especially careful when determining your size for these rings. We recommend professional sizing and, if possible, trying on a sample ring of similar width before ordering.

Arthritic or Large Knuckles

If you have arthritic fingers or large knuckles, consider specialized designs like hinged rings or adjustable shanks. Another option is to size your ring to fit over your knuckle and add sizing beads to the inside of the ring to keep it from spinning once in place.

Climate Considerations

If you live in a climate with significant seasonal temperature variations, your fingers may change size throughout the year. In very warm climates, consider sizing up slightly, especially for snug-fitting rings. Conversely, in cold climates, ensure your rings aren't too loose when your fingers are at their smallest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are online ring sizing methods?
Home sizing methods can be quite accurate when done carefully, but they're not as precise as professional sizing. For best results, use multiple methods and measure several times. For important purchases like engagement rings or bands that cannot be resized (like eternity bands), we strongly recommend professional sizing.
What if I'm between sizes?
If you find yourself between two sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger size, especially if you live in a warm climate or if the ring has a wider band. For rings with gemstones that extend around the band (like eternity rings), it's also safer to size up, as these styles cannot be resized later. In cold environments, sizing down might be preferable to prevent rings from slipping off.
Can all rings be resized?
Not all rings can be resized. Full eternity bands (with stones all around the band), tension settings, rings with certain gemstones (like emeralds, which can be damaged by heat), and rings made of unconventional materials (like tungsten, titanium, or stainless steel) typically cannot be resized. Most gold and platinum rings without stones around the entire band can usually be resized by 1-2 sizes in either direction.
Do left and right hands have different sizes?
Yes, most people's hands are slightly asymmetrical, and the dominant hand is often larger. If you're ordering a ring for your right hand but only know your left-hand size (or vice versa), measure both hands to account for any difference. The average difference is about a half-size, but it varies from person to person.
How much does weight fluctuation affect ring size?
Weight changes can affect finger size, but not always predictably. A significant weight change (usually 10+ pounds) may change your ring size by a half-size or more. If you anticipate substantial weight changes (such as pregnancy or planned weight loss), consider timing your ring purchase accordingly or choosing a style that can be easily resized.
